This is a remarkably fine disc, containing as good a performance of the Franck Sonata as I have ever encountered. Chen's playing is superlative - rich in tone, flawless in intonation, immaculate in articulation. He is obviously destined for a splendid career. Still, he would be the first to acknowledge a considerable debt to John Lenehan whose playing in both works blends power with authority.
MUSICAL OPINION
He (Chen) has one of the World's finest piano partners in Lenehan whose part in the Franck is without equal on disc.
THE YORKSHIRE POST
These two sonatas, written within a year of each other, make an unusual but very satisfying coupling, Strauss's youthful exuberance contrasting nicely with Franck's mature style. Chen and Lenehan have all the necessary qualities: technical confidence and panache, the ability to play with uninhibited expression, yet showing proper respect for the text of the music.
